Suburban Eclipse (2012)

The partial solar eclipse on 20 May 2012, at maximum lunar coverage in Southern California.

The “late night and early morning low clouds” that commonly blanket the Southern California coast scuttled my plans to view the eclipse from Malaga Cove in Palos Verdes Estates. But I noticed that the thick clouds provided a natural sun filter. So I walked to a nearby strip mall, dodged several impatient SUV drivers who had no idea why I was standing on their favorite parking spot, waited for an interesting partial break in the fast-moving clouds, and used the storefront signs as the foreground for my picture of the eclipse over suburban Los Angeles.
