The Spirit of the Ocean sculpture and fountain, at the base of the triumphal arch at the entrance to the Santa Barbara Courthouse, symbolizes the coastal city of Santa Barbara’s connection with the ocean. The 1929 sandstone sculpture was the work of Venetian-born artist Ettore Cadorin.
By 2010, decades of water, weathering, and patching had damaged Cadorin’s original sculpture beyond repair. Private donations funded a $700,000 restoration project to create a new faithful replica that was unveiled in July 2011. This picture is of the original sculpture and fountain, as it appeared in 2001.
