Mural Room (2003)

A section of the Mural Room in the Santa Barbara Courthouse. The table, chairs, and bookcases are the authentic furniture the county Board of Supervisors used when they convened there in 1929. This section of Dan Sayre Groesbeck’s mural depicts Mexico’s independence from Spain in 1822, which made California a Mexican territory. Since Groesbeck was a set designer for silent movies, he included “title card” captions for each scene in the mural. The caption for this section is just beneath the horse between the corner and the flag. It reads: “1822 California under Mexico visualizes another change in Sovereignty.”
