The 16-century Dutch windmill at the Self-Realization Fellowship Lake Shrine in Pacific Palisades, California, from an adjacent landing on the lake. The windmill was originally built by Hollywood set builder H. Everett McElroy when he owned the lake. In converting the site into a shrine, Paramahansa Yogananda turned the windmill’s ground floor into a meditation chapel. The windmill’s arms are fully functional, although they were never connected to a mill or pump mechanism. The arms are tied down to prevent them from turning in the wind.
