The Golden Lotus Archway from across the lake, at the Self-Realization Fellowship Lake Shrine in Pacific Palisades, California. Paramahansa Yogananda, the founder of the Self-Realization Fellowship, personally designed the Archway as an entry to a “Wall-less Temple” that contains a memorial to Mohandas Gandhi.
The lake has a resident population of ducks and swans. Swans were a personal favorite of Yogananda, signifying purity and transcendence in Hindu theology. Paramahansa, an honorific Sanskrit title conferred on a revered Hindu spiritual teacher, means “Supreme Swan.” Paramahansa Yogananda was born Mukunda Lal Ghosh, and later took the monastic name Swami Yogananda Giri.
