Microcosm of Los Angeles (2011)

A section of installation artist Barbara McCarren’s 1994 Hey Day in Pershing Square, Downtown Los Angeles, on a quiet afternoon. The irregular path leading to the fountain pond represents an earthquake fault. Some of the other tiles contain stars, recalling the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Several orange spheres represent a 19th century orange grove that grew near the park, which established California’s citrus industry. The various elements of Hey Day portray historic Pershing Square as a “microcosm of Los Angeles.”
