Mind, Body, Spirit, and Mellon Bank Center (2011)

Mind, Body and Spirit, a 1986 work by the Israeli sculptor Gidon Graetz, is one of the six sculptures in the plaza outside the Stuart M. Ketchum Downtown YMCA in Downtown Los Angeles. The Mellon Bank Center provides a background that echoes the polished bronze inside the coils of the sculpture.

The work is six meters high, and rotates on its black granite base. Graetz’ original title was Composition for Stainless Steel No. 1, reflecting its construction of polished stainless steel and bronze. But it was renamed in honor of the YMCA’s motto.
