Olvera Street Mariachi (2010)

A mariachi band serenades shoppers on Olvera Street in Downtown Los Angeles.

The zigzagging bricks represent the original path of la zanja madre, the “mother ditch” that carried water from the Los Angeles River to the pueblo in the 18th and 19th century. The ditch had been replaced with modern pipes well before Olvera Street was reinvented as a “Mexican marketplace” in 1930.
