Sun Yat-sen Statue (2014)

Dr. Sun Yat-sen was the first president of the Republic of China, established in 1911 after the overthrow of the last Qing Dynasty emperor. Although his Nationalist successors fled to Taiwan after the 1949 Communist takeover, Dr. Sun is revered in both mainland China and Taiwan— and also in Chinese communities around the world— as “Father of the Chinese Nation.”

Sculpted in in Taiwan, this statue of Dr. Sun in Los Angeles Chinatown’s Central Plaza was dedicated in 1966 to commemorate the 100th anniversary of his birth.
