Statue of Civilization #2 (2010)

Lee Lawrie’s marble Statue of Civilization at the Los Angeles Central Library. The open book in her right hand contains with quotations in five languages about knowledge and wisdom.

At the top of her skirt are three of the twelve panels representing ancient and modern civilizations. From bottom to top: a medieval European cathedral; a Mayan plumed serpent head; and a buffalo, covered Wagon, and the Liberty Bell representing the United States (which Lawrie presumably considered the Acme of Civilization).

Her headdress is a miniature of the Central Library building. On either side of it are two angels representing Los Angeles. On top are a grizzly bear and star, the representation of California on the state flag.
