The desert west coast of the island of Kauai, Hawaii. This beach is called Barking Sands. Under the right conditions, the sand here reportedly makes a sound like a barking dog when you walk on it.
From this part of Kauai you can see the “Forbidden Island” of Niihau on the horizon. Niihau is a privately-owned island, where about 160 native Hawaiians live the rustic life of ranchers and speak Hawaiian. The family that owns the island sells expensive helicopter tours of Niihau that briefly touch down on beaches well away from the inhabited areas.
