In a Roman Garden (2007)

A circular bench surrounds a geometric mosaic at the Getty Villa. In the background is the portico of the Villa’s main building with its carved ceiling, Corinthian columns, and painted walls. According to the plaque, the bronze sculpture (notice the white painted eyes) is titled “Head of an Athlete.” Most of the Getty’s outdoor statuary pieces have similarly uninformative titles. The original owner apparently felt no need to label his artwork, so archaeologists and curators often can’t determine either the artist or the subject.
