Portico and Garden (2007)

Part of the garden in the outer peristyle of the Getty Villa. The painted bronze head is a reproduction of one found at the Villa of the Papyri in Herculanum. The plaque titles it “Head of an Athlete.” Most of the Getty’s outdoor statuary pieces have similarly uninformative titles. The original owner apparently felt no need to label his garden decorations, so archaeologists and curators often can’t determine either the artist or the subject.
