Planetarium Dome (2007)

The 23-meter dome of the planetarium at Griffith Observatory, overlooking the Los Angeles Basin and its layer of smog. In this view from the Observatory roof near the coelostat dome, the late afternoon sun gives the white concrete a golden hue.

The copper sheathing on the outside of the dome is new, installed in 2004 as part of the Observatory’s overhaul project. Its brown color is the first step in forming the green patina it will acquire over the next 15 to 20 years.
