Carlsbad Spa (2014)

The plaza in front of the Carlsbad Mineral Water Spa. The spa opened in 1996, on the site where John Frazier dug a mineral water well in 1882 and established Carlsbad, California as an American center for balneotherapy. The faux-German building housing the spa is “Alt Karlsbad,” built in the 1960s in an attempt to revitalize the historic site. Vending machines in Alt Karlsbad and in an adjacent kiosk sell the “alkaline water” by the gallon. The sign in front advertises an array of pricey services, including massages, mud facials, aromatherapy, and of course an “alkaline mineral bath.”
