Emerald Bay in Infrared (2006)

Emerald Bay at Lake Tahoe, California, from Highway 89 north of Inspiration Point.

On infrared color film— a photographic technology that is now extinct— green foliage glows a bright ghostly pink because it strongly reflects infrared light. Water turns black because it reflects little infrared. For outdoor scenes like this, the look of infrared film is so stereotypical that appropriate software can create a (sur)realistic simulation of it from a normal color image.
